Access to Public Information

The Right to Information Act, 2005 enables citizens of India to seek information held by public authorities. It promotes transparency, accountability and informed participation in public administration.

1 Governing Act and Rules

Right to Information matters in Uttar Pradesh are governed by the Right to Information Act, 2005, the Uttar Pradesh Right to Information Rules, 2015, and applicable amendments and government notifications.

2 Who May Seek Information

Any citizen of India may request information available with a public authority. This may include inspection of records, certified copies, extracts, samples and information maintained in electronic form, subject to the provisions of the RTI Act.

3 Online RTI Services

The Uttar Pradesh RTI Online Portal provides facilities for submitting RTI applications and first appeals, paying the applicable fee and checking application status. Applicants should select the appropriate department or public authority available on the portal.

4 Response and Appeal

Information is ordinarily provided within 30 days. Where the requested information concerns the life or liberty of a person, it is to be provided within 48 hours. The prescribed appeal process may be followed if no response is received or the applicant is dissatisfied with the decision.
